Reddit User Unlocks Secret Netflix Profile Icons

A Reddit user has developed a browser extension that unlocks hundreds of retired profile icons on Netflix, giving desktop users access to avatars that no longer appear in the platform’s official picker.

The tool has quickly gained attention among fans who miss older icons tied to popular Netflix originals and licensed titles.

While the extension does not modify Netflix’s servers, it taps into avatar IDs that remain supported on the backend but are hidden from the standard user interface.

What the Extension Actually Does

The Chrome-based extension works by exposing additional avatar options inside Netflix’s profile settings. According to its creator, the tool surfaces more than 900 previously available profile icons.

These include avatars connected to titles such as:

  • Love, Death & Robots
  • Lost in Space
  • Young Royals

In many cases, Netflix has removed these icons from the visible avatar selector while still keeping their associated ID codes active behind the scenes. The extension allows users to either browse these hidden options directly or manually apply specific avatar IDs.

Importantly, the tool only changes what your browser sends to Netflix’s profile settings page. It does not alter Netflix’s backend systems or databases.

Desktop Only and Unofficial

The extension works on desktop browsers that support extensions, including Chrome, Edge and some other Chromium-based platforms. It does not work on mobile apps, smart TVs or game consoles.

Because it is a third-party creation, the tool is not affiliated with or endorsed by Netflix. Users considering installation should review extension permissions carefully and understand the potential risks.

As with any unofficial browser add-on, there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Netflix could update its website code at any time, potentially breaking functionality.
  • Browser extensions can pose privacy or security concerns depending on permissions granted.
  • Future platform changes could disable hidden avatar IDs entirely.

Why Netflix Removes Avatars

Netflix regularly rotates profile icons as part of licensing agreements, marketing cycles and UI simplification efforts. When shows leave the platform or promotional campaigns end, associated avatars are often retired.

However, in many cases, the technical infrastructure supporting those avatars remains intact. This extension simply makes those dormant options accessible again, at least for now.

A Niche but Passionate Use Case

Profile icons might seem minor, but for many subscribers they are a form of personal identity within shared accounts. Longtime fans often grow attached to specific characters or artwork.

By reviving older avatars, the extension appeals to nostalgia and personalization, two factors that continue to shape user experience trends across streaming platforms.

Still, users should approach with caution. While the extension does not directly tamper with Netflix’s servers, it remains an unofficial workaround.

For now, desktop users who miss retired profile icons have a new way to bring them back, but whether Netflix allows this loophole to remain open is another question.
